We are Family

Main Idea: We are called to treat every member of the church with the honor and care we would give our own family, especially those who are most vulnerable.

  1. Through God’s church, our idea of family is redeemed
    • I Timothy 5:1-2
      • Paul’s Instruction: Treat all members with respect and familial honor, not with condescension or improper relationships.
      • The church is God’s household, so relationships should be marked by love, respect, and a willingness to be in relationship with one another.
  1. We should serve our own families when they are in need: Family and church responsibility
    • I Timothy 5:3-8
      • First Responsibility: The home comes first. Family members are responsible for caring for their own relatives who are in need.
      • God’s Standard: This principle is a mandate from God, and it is a sin to neglect this duty.
      • Application: The church has a role to play in caring for its own, but it starts with our own household and families.
  1. In times of need, the church should serve one another: the church’s ministry to true widows
    • I Timothy 5:9-16
      • Honor true widows: The church should prioritize those who are truly in need and are in a vulnerable situation.
      • Qualities of those to be honored: These women should be at least sixty years old, have been faithful in marriage, and have a reputation for good deeds.
      • Service and prayer: Widows who are truly in need can serve the church by prayer and godly example.
