Seven Pursuits of a Godly Life

  • scriptureI Timothy 4:6-16
  1. The Characteristics of False Teachers
    • I Timothy 4:6
      • A good servant is constantly nourished by the message of faith and sound doctrine.
      • We must prioritize the consistent intake of Scripture and good teaching to grow spiritually, just as we need regular meals for physical health.
  1. The Deceptive Practices of False Teachers
    • I Timothy 4:7-8
      • Engage in spiritual disciplines like prayer and Bible study to develop spiritual strength.
      • While physical training has limited value, spiritual training is eternally beneficial.
  1. The Truth About God’s Creation
    • I Timothy 4:9-10
      • Our toil and striving are motivated by our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior.
      • This eternal perspective keeps us from wasting our lives on lesser pursuits and gives us the resolve to work hard for the salvation and spiritual development.
  1. The Sanctification of God’s Gifts
    • I Timothy 4:11-12
      • Timothy was to set an example for believers in his speech, conduct, love, faith and purity.
      • Our lives, not just our words, are a powerful testimony. We must align our message with our behavior, making our progress visible to others.
  1. Pursue Devotion to Ministry Disciplines
    • I Timothy 4:13
      • Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to encouragement and to teaching.
      • We must commit to the core practices of the Christian life and ministry, focusing on the clear communication and application of God’s word.
  1. Pursue the use of your Spiritual Gifts
    • I Timothy 4:14
      • Do not neglect the spiritual gifts given to you by God.
      • Each believer has unique gifts for ministry. We must identify, develop and use our gifts for the building up of God’s church.
  1. Pursue Personal Oversight and Perseverance
    • I Timothy 4:15-16
      • Practice these things, immerse yourself in them and keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.
      • Diligence in our personal walk and in sound doctrine is crucial for our own salvation and the spiritual well being of those we influence. We must persist in these pursuits for lifelong spiritual health and effectiveness.
