The Crown: Created With Dignity
What does it mean that every human being bears God's image? How would your relationships change if you consciously looked for God's image in every person you encountered this week?
The Throne: Created for Responsibility (vv.7-8)
What is the difference between biblical dominion and selfish control? What does it look like practically to let Jesus rule our finances, relationships, ambitions, time, and desires? Ask yourself honestly: Who is sitting on the throne of my life?
Humanity's Failure: “We See Not Yet All Things” (vs.8)
What examples of humanity's brokenness do you see around you? Why is it important that Christianity does not pretend that suffering and brokenness aren't real? What are some ways people try to solve humanity's problems without addressing sin?
“But We See Jesus” (vs.9).
What does Jesus' humanity tell us about God's willingness to enter our suffering? Compare Adam's disobedience in Genesis 3 with Jesus' obedience in Gethsemane. What do you notice? What does it mean for Jesus to be the “last Adam” according to 1 Corinthians 15:45?
The Cross: Jesus Tasted Death (vs.9).
What does the phrase “taste death” communicate about the reality of Jesus' suffering? Read Philippians 2:5–11. How does Jesus' humiliation lead to His exaltation? How does the cross demonstrate that suffering does not necessarily mean God has abandoned us?
Jesus Understands Our Suffering
ReadHebrews 4:14–16
How does Jesus' experience of suffering encourage you when you are hurting? What does Hebrews 4:15 teach us about the character of Jesus?
Living in the “Already” and “Not Yet”
What does “already, but not yet” mean in the Christian life? Why is it important to acknowledge what we do not yet see? How is biblical faith different from pretending that everything is okay?
Closing Discussion
If you had to summarize Hebrews 2:5–9 in one sentence, what would you say? Then complete this sentence: “Because I see Jesus, I can…”
Final Reminder
Crown: We were created with dignity and purpose. Throne: Jesus is the rightful King. Cross: Our King entered our suffering and tasted death for us. We may not yet see everything under His feet, but we see Jesus.
